Canada new immigration policy for international students, foreign workers and dia spouses
Canadian goment don set new conditions for international students, foreign workers and dia spouses to cut down di rate of work permit to 35% in 2024, wit di plan to issue 485,000 new study permit.
Di goment say di new target go reduce by 10% for 2025 and 2026, wit plan to issue 437,000 study permit in 2025.
In di latest announcement wey dey inside one statement, Canadian goment put in place new limit on study and work permit for spouses of both foreign workers and students wey dey undergo master’s and doctorate degree programs:
- Further reduction in di intake cap on international student study permits for 2025 based on 10% reduction from di 2024 target of 485,000 new study permits issue, and den stabilizing di intake cap for 2026 so di number of study permit issue go remain di same as 2025
- Updating di Post-Graduation Work Permit Program from fall dis year to better align wit immigration goals and labour market need.
- Limit work permit eligibility, dis year, to spouses of master’s degree students to only pipo wey go spend 16 months duration in dia program.
- Limit work permit eligibility, dis year to spouses of foreign workers in management or professional occupations or sectors wit labour shortages—unda Canada work permit programs (TFWP and IMP).
Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau ontop social media tok say dem go reduce di work hours of foreign workers.
“We go reduce di number of low-wage, temporary foreign workers and shortening di duration of dia work terms,” e tok.
“We adjust di program afta di pandemic, but di labour market change. We need businesses to invest in Canadian workers.”
Eligibility for Canada work and study permit in 2024-2027
Evri year, students and job seekers from Nigeria dey travel to Canada for employment and academic pursuit to betta dia professional and personal lives.
Dis move no go only affect di student or foreign workers but dia spouses too as di Canadian goment don tok say dem go only allow dia spouses to work in fields wia dem lack work-shortage.
Temporary residents go reduce from 6.5% of Canada population to 5%, dis go reflect in di 2025–2027 Immigration Levels Plan, wey dem go release in November 1, 2024.
Master and doctoral students, go need obtain Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). Di goment plan to reserve 12% spaces for dis students in recognition of di benefits dem go bring to di Canadian labour market.
Eligibility requirements for Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), applicants go need to score 7 Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) for university graduates and CLB for college graduates wey wan apply afta November 1.
Graduates from programs at public colleges go remain eligible for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) of up to three years if dem graduate from field of study link to occupations in long-term shortage.
Canada go also limit work permit for spouses of master’s degree students wey go stay program for16 months and above in dia program.
