Additional support is available for Scholars with disabilities, and a dedicated Online Coordinator ensures smooth transitions throughout the programme.
Scholarship Objectives
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program aims to cultivate a community of talented, entrepreneurial, and compassionate leaders from across Africa, empowering them to drive sustainable change and address the climate crisis. By combining academic rigor with leadership development, the program equips Scholars with the knowledge, skills, and networks to implement innovative solutions in climate adaptation, global health, biodiversity, and social justice.
Scholars are expected to engage in activities that nurture leadership, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving, while applying their learning to real-world challenges within their local communities and broader international contexts.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Strong academic performance and leadership potential
- A commitment to addressing barriers to education and development
- Motivation to pursue advanced studies online while continuing professional or community work
- A bachelor’s degree (for Master’s) or undergraduate/postgraduate qualifications (for diploma programmes) from a recognized African university
- A dedication to sustainability, climate action, or community development
Applicants for the Master’s programme may not already hold a postgraduate degree, whereas postgraduate diploma applicants may hold either undergraduate or Master’s qualifications.
Application Process
Applications for the 2026/27 scholarship open on 14 October 2025 at 10:00 BST. Applicants must submit their applications through the University of Edinburgh’s online portal. Importantly, candidates should apply only for the scholarship initially; successful applicants will be invited to apply for their chosen degree programme after receiving a scholarship offer, expected in March 2026.
To support applicants, an Information Session will be held on 16 October 2025 from 3:00–4:00 pm BST, providing guidance on eligibility, application requirements, and selection criteria. The scholarship program encourages all eligible candidates to attend and learn about the opportunities available.
For further guidance, applicants may consult the program’s FAQs and Application Guidance sections, or contact the program team at mcfsp@ed.ac.uk.
